What are Year 6 SATs?

Standard Assessment Tests: Also known as National Curriculum Tests–taken at the end of Year 2 (Key Stage 1- which is teacher assessed) and Year 6 (Key Stage 2).

  • Measuring Progress: Designed to evaluate your child’s academic progress and reflect the level at which they are currently working.

  • Setting Foundations: Results provide a clear picture of core Maths and English skills before the transition to secondary school.

Key Stage 1

  • Timing: Conducted throughout May in Year 2–at the end of infant school.

  • Core Subjects Assessed: Reading, writing (including spelling and handwriting), and maths (covering arithmetic, shapes, and measurement).

  • Teacher-Led Assessment: Evaluated through short tasks set by the class teacher to assess your child’s natural ability in a comfortable environment.

Key Stage 2

  • Formal Testing: Held on set days in mid-May–combining formal written tests with ongoing teacher assessments.

  • English Assessed: Reading comprehension, plus SPAG–Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar.
